How to Prepare Your Appliances for the Holidays

As the holiday season approaches, people throughout the world are making plans for the upcoming feasts. Gathering with family and friends from November until the beginning of January is the time of year we take a break from our everyday life and reconnect with loved ones.

Preparation is the key. It does not only include decorating the house and planning the menu, but also preparing the appliances for the holiday rush. Since the appliances will be getting a lot of use over the next few months, it is important to make sure that they are holiday-ready.

Tips on preparing appliances for the holidays

Test the appliances

Make sure all the appliances are in top working order weeks before the holiday season. This will help you resolve any problems that may need addressing beforehand.

Clean the appliances

Wipe down the inside and outside of all appliances that are frequently used as well as rarely used. Don’t forget to dust behind them to avoid shortages and possible fires.

Dishwasher

It is important to run the dishwasher through a clean cycle beforehand to make sure dishes are getting cleaned the first time around. If they are not, you have time to resolve the issue.

Calibrate oven

Calibrating an oven is a beneficial task you should perform prior to the holidays. Using an oven thermometer (must be an oven thermometer), make sure that the temperature you set the oven at registers is the same as the oven thermometer itself. If so, your oven is already calibrated. If not, call your local appliance store to troubleshoot the issue. They can also calibrate the oven at the same time.

Prepare the refrigerator and freezer

Cleaning and decluttering the refrigerator and freezer will help make room for storing foods during the day, and for leftovers afterward. Also, make sure to clean the coils in the back and underneath to help keep them working properly.

Garbage disposal

It is important to make sure you know what foods are allowed to be discarded in the garbage disposal to avoid clogging and the sink to back up.

Disinfecting

People sometimes forget to disinfect the sinks and trash cans before and during the holidays, but in doing so, it will help to eliminate bacteria and rancid odors that can build up.

Sharpen knives

Sharpening your knives a few weeks before the holidays will ensure they last throughout the holiday celebrations. It can also prevent injury since using a dull knife can be unsafe.

The holiday season is full of high spirits and joy but can quickly turn into frustration if your appliances are not in good working condition. Do not let a broken appliance or one that is not adequately working ruin the festivities by not taking the time to do a maintenance check beforehand.

Avoid the stress of challenging problems during the holiday season by following the maintenance tips provided, or simply contact your local appliance store and schedule a service check. Consistent appliance maintenance is the key to keeping your home running safely and smoothly for years to come, especially during the holiday season.
